America, Land That I Love
The United States of America. Though this land can be described geographically, the feelings one receives from being in this great land can never be adequately described. Geographically, the U.S. lies in between Mexico and Canada in North America. This country consists of 50 states which spans five time zones. The United States, which became a nation in 1776, has many mountain ranges, some of the most famous being the Rockies in the West, the Black Hills Mountains in North Dakota, and the Appalachian Mountains in the East. The U.S. capital is located in Washington D.C., a city in the District of Columbia, an area between Virginia and Maryland. America’s government is a representative democracy, and for that reason, it is one of the most prominent governments in the world. Currently, the President is Barack Obama, who was inaugurated in January 2009. I have lived in this grand country my whole life, and I would not chose any differently because this land is truly one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.
America is a country where every citizen is given the chance to reach his or her goals and potentials in life. In contrast, in other countries, people are not offered the same opportunities to succeed. Because dictators think of themselves, the people are not treated as all humans beings should. America has come a long way from being a country that favored slavery. In this day and age, everyone, no matter what their backgrounds or skin color is, has the same opportunities in life. The Declaration of Independence states that every man and woman is born with certain inaliable rights that have been endowed by their Creator. Americans are blessed to have the rights to achieve their potentials.
Though some Americans have turned their backs from the Creator, America is still a nation with a moral foundation and biblical principals. Our country’s godly heritage dates back to the Pilgrims, who resolved: “Whatever it might cost them, to shake off the anti-Christian bondage, and, as the Lord’s free people, to join themselves by a covenant into a church . . . In the fellowship of the Gospel.” William Bradford said this in his book, History of Plymouth Plantation, and from this statement, we see that America was founded by godly men and women who wanted to live their Christian lives openly. It is obvious that the Founding Fathers were also grounded in the faith. George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and Bible.” Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hancock concurred that God’s hand was essential in the starting of our nation. Other countries have experienced hard times, for their countries were not grounded in God’s Word. All Americans must pray that America continues to look to God and honor Him, just as the Founders of this great nation did.
When people all over the world think of America, the first thought that comes to their minds is Freedoms. This great nation is blessed to have many freedoms. A large percentage of Americans take their freedoms for granted. On a Sunday, many wake up, eat breakfast, and go to the church of their choice, without even thinking about the government stopping them. In some other countries, however, citizens wake up, eat the small portions of rations that the government allows them to have, and go to work, for they are not allowed to go to the church of their choice. Americans should not take for granted the Bill of Rights, which grants us many freedoms other countries do not have. Some of the most important freedoms that the Bill of Rights grant all Americans are these: the freedom of religion, the freedom of speech and press, the right to assembly, the right to appeal to the government for action, the right to bear arms, and the outlaw of slavery. Other freedoms include, the right to a fair trial and the right to call witnesses forth during a trial, and rights to African Americans. These are just a few of the many freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. These freedoms are some of the things that make America different from other countries. We should thank God for our freedoms in America, and appreciate what other countries do not have.
These freedoms come from the strong American government, which is kept strong with checks and balances. When our nation was born, the founders worked hard to make sure that government did not have too much power and that one leader in government did not have all of the power. America’s government consists of the following three parts, the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. The Executive Branch consists of two men, the President and the Vice President. This branch enforces the laws and is the highest branch, though it is does not have more power than the other two. The second branch is the Legislative Branch which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and together, the two are called Congress. Congress votes on and makes the laws. Each state in the Union gets to send two representatives (elected by the people) to theSenate. The number representatives each state gets to send the House of Representatives, however, varies from state to state. The number of representatives a state sends to the House of Representatives depends on the state’s population. The larger the population, the more representatives a state is allowed to send to Washington D.C. The third branch is the Judicial Branch which is known as the Supreme Court and consists of eight justices and one chief justice. The Supreme Court’s job is to interpret the laws and make sure that they are consistent with the Constitution. When the Legislative Branch passes a law, the Executive Branch can veto it, and the Legislative Branch votes again on the bill. If the bill still passes, the law will be put into effect. The Judicial Branch decides if the laws are Constitutional, as well as acting as a regular court, voting on other cases brought before them. America has one of the best functioning governments in the world, for the power is spread out equally.
With these incomparable qualities, America is the greatest nation in the world. One distinctive quality of this country is that its citizens are given the opportunities reach their optimum. America’s greatest blessing is its Christian founding that protect each person’s basic rights. Also, this nation is a strong nation because it is blessed with freedoms that other countries do not have. Unlike other governments in history, America’s government does not have too much control over its people. Why would anyone want to live in another country?
